Moving homes is already stressful, but it can be even worse if you’re the target of a moving scam. When hiring movers, it’s important that you do your research and that you don’t just settle on the first company that gives you a reasonably sounding quote. Scammers can make your move an expensive nightmare. Avoid the traumatic experience and learn how to identify when you’re getting scammed! Here are some tips.
Phoning it in
When you phone a moving company asking for an estimate, because they haven’t seen your home yet, it will likely be an unrealistic one. Homeowners have a lifetime of belongings to pack – the size of this is different for everyone. Prices are always based off more than mileage! Movers have to consider the weight of your belongings and the amount of room being taken up in the truck. So, don’t get too excited when you get a low price over the phone. Good moving companies will come to the site and see what they’re dealing with. U
Deposits
A trustworthy moving company won’t ever demand cash or a substantial deposit before performing the move. Typically, you pay the mover once your belongings are delivered to your new home. Once you pay before the move, you might struggle to get your possessions back. This is a huge red flag. Also, if you want to avoid scams as a whole, pay with a credit card so you can be sure that there isn’t any fraudulent activity going on.
Get Everything in Writing
Make sure that you get a written contract of all of the terms and conditions, along with insurance coverage. When you get the contract, read everything carefully, including the limits of liability and disclaimers.
Make an Inventory Checklist
When you make a detailed list of all your belongings, you will be confident that when everything’s dropped off at your new home that nothing is missing or damaged.
Double Check Packing Costs
If you decide to pack your own belongings, the mover isn’t responsible if they experience any damage. Once you let the movers pack, the price is higher in order to accommodate for boxes, packing material and labour. Ask the movers how experienced they are with packing and make sure that they don’t just throw all your belongings in a box without taking extra care of them. Don’t get scammed into paying more and then get back damaged belongings!
